Style + Value

March Is . . .

. . . usually associated with St. Patrick’s Day, an indisputably Green event. Yes, we acknowledge that the Green in question has not traditionally been synonymous with a sober concern for the environment and all the implications of human activity within it. But why shouldn’t it be, beginning right now?

Oahu

Aloha, Oahu

HAWAIIAN CULTURE is so integrated with the land that you can’t teach it without learning about the land,” says Ena Sroat, co-owner of Hina Adventures, an eco-tour company on Oahu. Its custom “West Side Cultural Experience” explores ancient Hawaiian agricultural practices. Adventure-seekers get to hike to an ancient spring; try their hand at making “kapa,” or cloth; and visit a traditional “hale,” or meeting house (shown), where they learn the area’s lore and legends. Tours last six to seven hours and start at $140 per person. A portion of the cost goes to benefit Ka‘ala Farms.

‘There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.’

Ugly: The New Black {the fash lane}

1UglyShirtBeauty is in the eye of the beholder. But ugly is in the eye of Fugly McUgly, CEO of 1UglyShirt.com. The Web-based store specializes in the ugly aesthetic of men’s vintage clothing, from $20 tees to $200 ensembles. So what’s Green about it? “By recycling clothes, we short-circuit the pollution and poor working conditions associated with new clothing manufacturers,” McUgly says. (These ties scored all 10 points on the Fugly Meter.)
